Most of my posts are about pleasant things -- with the occasional rant about things that perturb me!

FAKAHATCHEE STRAND (Fla. Everglades)

This week was the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Festival in the Florida Everglades.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was an American journalist, writer, feminist, and environmentalist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development.

Even as a young woman, Douglas was outspoken and politically conscious of many issues that included women's suffrage and civil rights. She was called upon to take a central role in the protection of the Everglades when she was 79 years old. For the remaining 29 years of her life she was "a relentless reporter and fearless crusader" for the natural preservation and restoration of the nature of South Florida. Her tireless efforts earned her several variations of the nickname "Grande Dame of the Everglades", as well as the hostility of agricultural and business interests looking to benefit from land development in Florida. Numerous awards were given to her, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was inducted into several halls of fame.

Ms. Douglas lived until age 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, an obituary in The Independent in London stated, "In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

At the Festival there was a guy with a bunch of
exotic animals. He warned people of buying exotic animals
because they require special care. He had a had a bunch of
exotics, but they were ones he has rescued, and most were
born in captivity. Bottom line was, stick with dogs or
cats if you are not prepared to take care of an exotic animal.

A leopard.
A Sulcata Tortoise
A Barn Owl
(It was sooo cute!)
An Iguana.
A python.

(Forgot what kind of snake this was!)
A young alligator.
He brought out an alligator and a crocodile to
show the difference in them
(alligator on the left with his mouth shut)
Again, the croc is the one with the open mouth.
I was lucky enough to be able to go on a
tram ride through the Fakahatchee Strand.

THE BALD EAGLES ARE BACK!

Last year at this time, a pair of Bald Eagles had a nest with two babies in a residential area of Pembroke Pines, Broward County, Florida. While it was an unusual place for the pair, the babies thrived and eventually flew away. This year, the Eagles are BACK! This time, with three chicks!

This is one of the parents watching over the nest area.
Here, he is right above the nest watching his babies!
This is the other parent coming with food for the babies
(a fish). I would assume this is the mother (since mothers
always do all the work!)
The babies (a little hard to see).
The parent is feeding them.
